Abstract

Mathematics is “the science of numbers, quantities, and shapes and the relations between them”. Its history dates back almost three millennia – indeed, many insights found in this book have been known for centuries. The driving force behind the development of mathematics may be found in human nature: As a species, we seem to be uniquely interested in finding rational explanations for regular or repetitive phenomena in order to predict them.
