Abstract

One of the most characteristic features of bats is the life of secrecy they live under the cover of darkness. There is nothing unusual about mammals being nocturnal. On the contrary, it is a normal state, and bats have likely been night animals ever since the Cretaceous. Nevertheless, one might wonder why not a single species has evolved to be diurnal. What is it that has so consistently prevented bats from being active during the day?
