Abstract

This chapter examines the representation of suburban homes in three Finnish films from the 1960s. The films were made during a decade of great social and political change as both the Finnish welfare state and newly built suburban housing estates were taking shape. I argue that the visual language of the films conveys anxieties surrounding a newly emerging suburban lifestyle and captures the evolution of domestic life. They dispel the myth of a perfect suburban home and unveil tense family relations and a problematic relationship with one’s surroundings. The paper introduces new readings of pivotal Finnish films, examines their larger sociopolitical context and asks broader questions of the relationship of the cinematic spaces to the real world they depict. The paper considers the role of cinema as not only depicting, but also influencing and mediating this social change.
