Multimodality Imaging Assessment of Aortic Regurgitation

Abstract

Aortic regurgitation (AR) is a common valvular heart disease secondary to either congenital or acquired conditions. AR causes both pressure and volume overload of the left ventricle (LV), resulting in LV cavity dilation, eccentric hypertrophy and, ultimately, systolic dysfunction. Echocardiography is the primary imaging modality to assess and follow patients with AR, and the recent three-dimensional (3D) capabilities enable to appreciate the functional complexity of the aortic valve (AV) complex in the beating heart [1]. The only effective treatment of patients with severe AR is surgery. Multi-modality imaging plays a pivotal role in establishing the optimal timing of intervention, before irreversible LV dysfunction develops, and also in planning the surgical procedure (repair versus replacement; ascending aorta replacement etc).
