Abstract
In this chapter I will focus on the brief description of the interaction between a single cavity field mode and single or ensembles of electron spins. Starting from the simplest case of a single two level system in the cavity, I introduce a formalism to treat ensembles of spins coupling to the cavity field mode.

Notes
- 1.
Nota bene: for the sake of simplicity all dissipation rates in this chapter are introduced as the half-width at half-maximum of the corresponding natural linewidth. In the experimental chapters the measure for each rate observed will be indicated.
