Abstract
Thymectomy is indicated in the treatment of myasthenia gravis and for thymic tumours which may or may not be associated with myasthenia. Patients with myasthenia gravis may have impaired ventilatory capacity and only a poor ability to cough. Particular dialogue with the anaesthetist and neurologist is required. Patients with myasthenia should be as well controlled as possible prior to surgery. This will be by their neurologist and will require optimization of medications, immunosuppression and possibly plasmapheresis.
