Abstract
This chapter presents the key legal and policy context behind this book. The cases of three mothers released on Appeal after wrongful convictions for murdering their children are charted and the Inquiry into these cases discussed. The ‘Kennedy Report’, which was the key result of this Inquiry, is introduced, alongside significant recommendations, including the Rapid Response, Joint Agency Approach and other key elements of systematic investigation following sudden, unexpected child death. The psychosocial foundation of the book is also established alongside the central format, structure and approach.
