Abstract
This chapter profiles Joao Nhambiu, who was instrumental in creating UNEMO, an umbrella organization of Portuguese students studying in the USA and other Western countries. It documents the splits that were caused by Frelimo’s adoption of a policy requiring students studying abroad to set aside their studies and take part in the armed struggle. This policy was accompanied by growing reliance on training and support from the Soviet Union. The chapter concludes with a profile of Joseph Massinga, who broke with Mondlane and Frelimo because of the new policies on education.
