Abstract
This chapter quickly traces developments in Mozambique from independence through 2013, shortly before the author’s death. It briefly describes the brutal war waged by RENAMO, the death of President Machel in a plane clash, and the Vatican-brokered settlement that ended the civil war and set the stage for the country’s first democratic multi-party election. Profiles of Machel’s successors, Joaquin Chissano and Armando Guebuza, illustrate the twists and ironies of Mozambique’s political evolution. The chapter ends with the author’s hope that Mozambicans will honestly and directly confront the past.
