Abstract

This introductory chapter situates vocabulary learning in second language learning and sets out why there is a clear need for exploring individual Chinese learners’ experiences of strategic vocabulary learning in the study-abroad context. It also addresses some important issues, that is, the quality of strategy use, the complexity and fluidity of learning strategies, contributing to the field of vocabulary learning strategy. After explaining the aims of this book, this chapter provides an overview of the organisation and content of the book and identifies its intended audience.
