Chapter 1 Introduction

The Introduction offers an overview of the regulatory structures which have shaped the international aviation industry, favouring the development of national airlines with close links to their governments, each airline enjoying a protected home market, dominating its home base, and competing with other national airlines within the parameters set by governments under bilateral air service agreements such as Bermuda 2. The chapter notes certain intrinsic differences between the markets open to US and UK airlines, arising mainly from the facts of geography, and the evolution of UK and US policies for the regulation of their respective airline industries over the period 1970—2010. The chapter concludes with notes on the practical conduct of negotiations and the structure of the book.
