Abstract
Brunt reflects on the current state of Chinese economic development, arguing that Chinese growth is about to drastically slow down. There are still enormous unexploited opportunities for growth in China but there are also many blockages, such as underemployment in the huge and inefficient government sector. The Government will not risk social and political unrest by cutting state jobs in a slowdown, so the inefficiency will not be fixed anytime soon. Combined with various other problems—such as declining exports, overinvestment in housing, weak financial institutions, poor infrastructure quality—China will struggle to be star performer in the next 25 years. The One Belt One Road project is only exacerbating this problem.
