Abstract
By an area of more than 100,000 km2, the Great Sand Sea is the largest one in Egypt. Lying in the western part of the Western Desert, it occupies a huge basin that extends from the Gilf Kebir Plateau in the south, to Siwa Depression in the north. Linear dunes dominate all-over this sand sea. Characteristics of this sand sea are analyzed such as dune types and patterns, morphometric aspects, in addition to sand properties: grain size, minerals, micro-features, and source(s) of sand. Age and mode of development of the Great Sand Sea are also discussed within this chapter.
