Lawyers and Globalization in Peru (1990–2014): Challenges in the Shadows

Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to discuss the changes produced in the last two decades in the Peruvian legal market. It also explains these changes in the broader context of the institutional reforms that are part of the process of globalization. The chapter provides an assessment of the importance of globalization as a complex phenomenon and of the need to understand the changes in the historic process that informs practices and cultural paths. In this context, the equality deficiency and the exclusion from public institutions’ design are elements that have to be reckoned with in order to appreciate the importance of the legal practice. Furthermore, it analyzes lawyer’s activities that are attempting to adjust to the requirements of professional demands from international markets and global transactions. The law firms, their organization, their articulation with the global market and the political implications derived from the activity of these corporations are the focus of our discussion and reflections.
