Abstract

This chapter is an introduction to caring for children who have had many other negative experiences on top of maltreatment and being removed from their home. Children who come into foster care constitute one of the most vulnerable groups in society, and there are many barriers to foster parents being able to provide sensitive care. This chapter introduces the Relational Learning Framework (RLF) which was developed to help foster parents and foster care practitioners understand what children who have experienced abuse and neglect learn about relationships from these experiences. The chapter provides an overview of some of the challenges facing foster care including the effects of multiple placements and the high rates of indigenous and minority children in foster care.
