Abstract

Biobanks are storage facilities of biospecimens and related information. They are foreseen to promote research efforts and, hence, disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. As a result, several countries including Arab countries have established biobanks at the national level. However, these establishments are associated with a number of ethical aspects as well as several controversial issues including public approval of such initiatives. This chapter discusses the potential of biobanks, highlights major ethical challenges that must be considered when attempting to start a biobank, and offers solutions in order to operate a successful biobank.
