Abstract

The introductory chapter offers an historical re-assessment of Italy’s role in the international system, from the 1960s to the end of the Cold War and the collapse of Italy’s ‘Parties’ Republic’. After presenting the main arguments and structure of the book, and Italian and international historiography of Italy’s foreign policy, Chapter 1 introduces and contextualises the main conclusions to be drawn from the essays collected in this volume: although sometimes an underrated ally and a not over-reliable partner, Italy was an important factor in the Western system and a vital element in the West European subsystem.
