Abstract

There are many ways in which the police have face-to-face contact with the public. Each contact such as stop and search or entry to property can be necessary for the enforcement of law but still seen as a potential intrusion into an individual’s privacy. Notwithstanding the complex job the police face in balancing law enforcement and citizens’ rights to privacy, there are evidently occasions where the implementation of the various laws, codes and rules is leading to unnecessary and improper intrusion into personal and information privacy. The efficient oversight and supervision of these operational police–public encounters should uphold the ideas of privacy wherever possible.
