Abstract

A 9-year-old boy with no significant past medical history presented to the emergency department with 4 days of swelling just in front of his left ear and 1 week of “pink eye” on the left side. He also had a fever 4 days prior to presentation and was taken to a local emergency department where he was given trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and cephalexin. Given that the eye redness and left-sided facial swelling were not improving, the patient was taken to a different emergency department where he was given one dose of intravenous vancomycin and transferred to our pediatric tertiary care hospital.
