Abstract
This chapter discusses the use of digital technology in three contemporary screen-to-stage musicals: Ghost: The Musical (2011), Rocky: The Musical (2014), and Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story on Stage (2006). Utilizing Marvin Carlson’s theory of “ghosting” the chapter examines ways in which digital technology allows the stage adaptations of iconic films to “ghost” their own source material. Through digital scenography, these three musicals allow audience members to interact with the beloved films on which they are based on a more personal and visceral level than was ever possible with the original cinematic incarnations.
