Abstract
Assisting individuals and families in planning for the potential costs related to caregiving, and managing those costs during a period of caregiving, requires a knowledge base that includes both the financial planning process and the environment in which caregiving takes place. The potential for financial devastation must be considered not only for the care recipient, but also for each unpaid caregiver. Planning for caregiving contributes to the overall goal of successful aging because it encompasses an important support system. In order to plan for the costs related to caregiving, an understanding of important demographic trends such as the aging population and increasing racial and ethnic diversity, changes in living arrangements, evolving health care needs, and challenges to financial well-being is crucial. Additional information about the activities of caregiving and the individuals providing care, as well as the direct and indirect costs of caregiving, is needed to determine appropriate recommendations for care recipients and their caregivers. A knowledge of the sources available for paying the costs, along with additional resources that can be used to reduce the financial impact to the care recipient and the caregiver, is also beneficial.
