Abstract
Implementing and sustaining school mental health programs can be a challenging and multifaceted process. Over the past several decades, considerable research, policy, and funding have been focused on the use of evidence-based programs and practices. Far less focus has been given to the implementation of these practices. The combination of effective programs and effective implementation methods is required to assure consistent use of programs and reliable benefits to students with mental health needs. This chapter outlines how implementation science and the use of evidence-based Active Implementation Frameworks (Fixsen et al. Implementation research: A synthesis of the literature. University of South Florida, Tampa, FL, 2005) can guide the process of implementation from selection of a program through full and effective use of that program. The information in this chapter is intended to help educators and mental health professionals become familiar with these Active Implementation Frameworks and their importance to implementing and sustaining effective mental health programs in rural educational settings.
