Abstract

Two thirds of adults with bipolar disorder begin to show signs during adolescence, and a one third of young people with serious mood problems eventually progress into a bipolar presentation over time. Bipolar disorder that begins in youth is termed pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD). It is crucial for educators and clinicians working with or within the school system to be aware of and understand PBD in the school setting. We discuss types of bipolar disorder, associated risk factors, and the presentation of the disorder in the classroom. In addition, we describe evidence-based assessment and treatment for PBD through the evidence-based framework. Early detection and intervention have the potential to improve markedly the course and outcome for youths with PBD. The school setting is the optimal place for mental health advocates to intervene. We recommend collaborative next steps for educators and clinicians.
