Abstract

A number of normed tests specific to the measurement of children’s social skills have been developed. These checklists have become a centerpiece in the assessment of social skills in children. The assessment and treatment of social skills has a long history and extensive research background encompassing several different age groups in addition to clinical populations. Due to the demonstrated importance that social skills have in regard to desirable outcomes, it is particularly important that social skills assessments are conducted accurately. Further, accurate assessment of both adaptive and maladaptive social skills while using assessment methods with sound psychometric properties allows for the appropriate identification of potential intervention targets. Much of the social skills assessment research focuses on the use of rating scales as well as the direct observation of behavior. This chapter will review these methods and the research that supports them.
