The Use of Addressing Terms in Social Media: The Case of Cameroonian Youth Practices

Abstract

This present article focuses on addressing terms which are, according to Braun, expressions used to address people. Lagorget has distinguished three main categories of addressing terms: proper names, pronouns of the second person, common nouns. I have convoked, as a methodological framework, the conversational interaction approach, following Kasparian and Gérin, based on spontaneous conversations and taking into account their context and dynamics. The main focus in this chapter is the exploration of the way terms of address are used in a corpus collected from Cameroon youth in social media such as Facebook and WhatsApp. It is shown that these addressing terms, and the way they are utilised, present some specificities in their various forms and typologies, in order to keep the same spontaneity and immediacy in social media written exchanges as in speech.
