Abstract

Hardy continues the history of the Patient Voices Programme from 2004 to 2010. After addressing some of the challenges faced by the new programme, including ethical issues, use of appropriate terminology, the need for research and difficulties in disseminating the work of Patient Voices, the author details the consolidation of the programme, highlighting some of the key projects that revealed the breadth of use of digital storytelling in healthcare, across education, patient engagement, service improvement and research. Meanwhile, Patient Voices expanded its network of friends and collaborators, undertaking work internationally and joyfully accepting the British Medical Journal’s 2010 award for Excellence in Healthcare Education. Regular supervision was identified as essential to maintain the mental health, well-being and emotional safety of digital storytelling facilitators.
