Abstract

Reading aloud for testing visual acuity involves nearly all of the cranial nerves. As a screening examination performed within few seconds, it provides irrefutable evidence that small images – letters – are seen and synthesized into words. These functions are then integrated into language and spoken skills requiring highly complex assimilation of motor function. Expressing the meaning of what was just read reflects memory and requires a high level of integrated thought.
