Abstract

Beginning with the lips, causes of swelling, vesicles, pigmentation, and vascular anomalies are presented. The examination proceeds to the oral mucosa with various patches and ulcerations described. Examination of the tongue includes checking for abnormalities of size, color, texture, and sensations. A method to survey the teeth, gingiva, palate, and sublingual fossa is provided.

The pharyngeal structures are visualized using slight variations of the traditional technique to improve exposure. Acute pharyngitis with etiology clues is given along with features that suggest the complication of a peritonsillar abscess.
