The Need for the Study of Parliamentarians in Spain

Abstract

This chapter explains the rationale of the book and outlines the chapters. There are two basic motivations for the book. Firstly, there is a widespread phenomenon of political disaffection, which is particularly important in the case of Southern European countries such as Spain, reflecting a deep divide between citizens and their representatives. Secondly, alienation from politics and lack of transparency lead to widespread ignorance about who the politicians are, where they come from and what they do. Although the literature on Spanish political elites is rather scarce, academic interest in the study of political elites is growing. The book tries to fill that void in the literature by analyzing survey data from Spanish MPs in national and regional chambers.

The most transparent legislative assemblies were Cantabria (98.2) and Navarre (87.2), followed by the Senate (83.8).
