We give an indication of some of the choices that have been made in the process of preparing the translations presented here.

The discussion here of the term ‘heap’ paraphrases an earlier and slightly longer one: [3, p. 365, note 32]. The latter also contains details of other names that have been used for these objects.

For example, as of 5 August 2016, a search for ‘semigroud’ on MathSciNet returns just seven results, whilst a search for ‘semiheap’ returns 71.
