Abstract

This chapter examines the functions performed by ‘Sailor Princes’ within the context of High Imperialism and accelerated globalization. First, the princes are conceptualized as mobile royal empire roamers and empire builders who systematically visited the various provinces, colonies and diaspora communities that belonged to their respective nations and thus integrated them into tightly knit imperial units. Second, they are conceived as easily deployable royal diplomats who worked towards good (economic, cultural, political and military) relations with a variety of states in East Asia or the Americas. The chapter investigates the ways in which the princes’ royal visits were received by colonial and diaspora communities. And it queries whether they were cosmopolitan bridge-builders or rather Eurocentric, chauvinist representatives of their nations’ interests in a fierce international power struggle.
