This chapter examines the wide-ranging area of interaction with computer instruments from two perspectives: communications and interfaces. The former is presented as the binding element that connects together the parts of a complex system. The latter relates to the kinds of user experience that are possible for the types of software we have been exploring in this book. In the course of the text, we will introduce the key aspects of MIDI and OSC, and examine the possibilities for the provision of graphical and physical interfaces to computer instruments.
