In this chapter, we examine the technique of granular synthesis from first principles. We begin by looking at the definition of a grain, its fundamental characteristics and a basic instrument that can be used to synthesise it. Two basic types of grain generation are studied, synchronous and asynchronous, which can produce streams and clouds of particles. Example code implementing these techniques is presented. The chapter concludes with a look at grain generator opcodes in Csound.
