Abstract

In 2007, the Catholic Bishops of Latin American (CELAM) held their Fifth General Conference at the shrine of Aparecida in Brazil. This chapter offers an introduction to the ecumenical impulses of the resulting Aparecida Document and identifies the ecumenical challenges in Latin America today. Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio—now Pope Francis—was one of the main editors of the Aparecida document and in the final section the chapter compares Aparecida to the Pope’s first apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (2013) and analyses how the impressions and impulses from Latin America may influence the ecumenical approach of the universal Catholic Church.
