Abstract
There was a desire for a union of reason and faith in the Russian society of 1870s. The teachings of L.N. Tolstoy was formed as a moral-religious and perceived by educated people. His followers tried to use the religiosity of the people and start advocating Tolstoyism among the common people. They turned their gaze to the Dukhobortsy. This Russian sect of the Protestant type were resettled from Tavrida province to the southern Caucasus in the 1841–1845. The situation in Dukhobortsy sect after the death of their last legitimate leader in 1886 and the ensuing split was favourable for the perception of new doctrine. Tolstoy’s teaching was accepted by new sect leader P. Verigin and proclaimed him in his own name. The new Dukhobortsy doctrines is a combination of the traditional Dukhobortsy dogmas and some propositions of the teachings of Tolstoyism.
