Abstract

Based on the issues of the journal Christiyanka (Christian Woman), an organ of the Union of Orthodox Parish Confraternities in Bulgaria, the present chapter discusses the media strategies of the clergy and laity for defining and defending the aspirations of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church to intervene actively in the social sphere after World War I. This chapter shows how this specific version of religious renewal presupposed collaboration with the state, a kind of secularisation of the main functions of the clergy, and a monopolisation of discussions of social questions by the Church. It also traces the development of the Bulgarian conception of practical Christianity‚ understood as intensive charitable work and influenced by the Protestant diaconia and Catholic caritas.
