Abstract
For the Roman Catholic Church in France, the crisis beginning in 1789 represented a catastrophic rupture with the past. This would however (as had the Reformation) stimulate a creative response. The first part of the Introduction outlines the objectives of a book intended to define the ways in which the Roman Catholic Church responded to the ‘Satanic’ forces of rebellion emerging in 1789, 1830 and 1848. It also examines the interaction between religion and politics, and the evolution of Church-State relations under a succession of different regimes. The second, more theoretical, part provides an assessment of the ‘power of religion’.
