Anterior Open Repair of Inguinal Hernia in Adults

Abstract

Inguinal hernia repairs are one of the most commonly performed operations worldwide, and the majority of patients require surgery even if asymptomatic at presentation. Since the sixteenth century, there have been numerous techniques for open anterior repair described and several classification systems for groin hernias developed. Although the Shouldice repair is the superior suture repair technique and has low recurrence rates in specialist centres, mesh repairs remain the gold standard when performed in general surgical practice. This chapter describes the keys to successful outcomes in the anterior open mesh repair (Lichtenstein repair). It also details with the Shouldice repair and other suture techniques for historical interest.
