Abstract
While not necessary, an ileostomy or colostomy can be created laparoscopically. In cases where a stoma is planned, stoma creation is an ideal single-incision case, as placing the port through the predetermined stoma site leads to an “incisionless surgery.” If placed at the end of a procedure for protection or stand alone, reduced ports can be used to assist with safe entry, running the bowel, and assuring proper orientation. As in any operation, come prepared – know your patient, know the pathology, and be prepared to have a backup plan if the operation originally planned is not feasible. When there is flexibility in the stoma created, keep in mind that a loop ileostomy is usually the easiest stoma to maintain.
