Abstract
In this chapter, a brief introduction and understanding of UWB technology and MIMO technology is presented. In the first part, brief history of UWB technology and general concepts with various applications are discussed. The antenna requirements and their performance characterization for successful implementation of UWB technology are explained. In the second part of this chapter, the concept of MIMO systems and its channel capacity is explained. The motivation for using MIMO system is the possibility to achieve parallel sub-channels between the transmitters and receivers through a rich scattering environment and consequently to increase the channel capacity. Two popular signaling schemes which are used to exploit the MIMO systems: spatial multiplexing and space time coding are described along with examples of encoding techniques.
