Abstract
Development of novel medical technologies is a core reason for the historical growth in endoscopic procedures. Between 1968 and 1990, the introduction of technologies for clinical procedures such as endoscopic retrograde pancreatography (ERCP), colonoscopic polypectomy, and endoscopic ultrasonagraphy led to the golden era of innovation in endoscopy Sivak (Gut 55(8):1061–4, 2006). Clinicians are instrumental in the development of new technologies and procedures. Adequate integration of clinicians into the device development process is an important factor to improve its outcomes (Rosenberg N, Gelijns AC, Dawkins H (eds) Sources of medical technology: universities and industry. National Academies Press, Washington, DC, 1995; Chatterji et al. (Health Aff 27(6):1532–43, 2008)). Therefore, it is beneficial for physicians, fellows, nurses, and technicians in the field of gastroenterology to gain an understanding of the device development process.
