The Practice of Reading: Austen as Guide

Abstract

This chapter looks at the critical and prose accounts of novels that attempted to sort out the increasingly complex Victorian literary world. It explores the links between reading and education and considers how Jane Austen became the heroine of the novel-reading public, as her work was deployed in discussions about the history and development of the novel, the hierarchy of texts, and the rights and responsibilities of English readers. Much of this discussion took place in Victorian reading guides, and the chapter offers a close analysis of these widespread, yet understudied, texts.
