Abstract

This postscript reflects on the social dimensions of the high mortality epidemics documented in this volume in relation to the recent West African Ebola epidemic of 2013–2016. The aim is to discern inspiration and hypotheses for further comparative analysis. It argues that global and national health organizations have neglected the value of historical analysis to epidemic preparedness and response, and in challenging stereotypes that can be as lethal as the diseases themselves.
