Abstract

With all the discussions on institutional challenges and the inner workings of the UN at headquarters in New York, it is too easy to lose sight of the real issue at hand: the millions of people who suffer during and after conflicts. We should never forget that the UN Charter was motivated by the desire “to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war [and] to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom” (UN 1945: 3).
