Abstract
Al Talei offers the insight of a seasoned Omani journalist on her topic. She aims to illustrate the cultural and religious circumstances that Arab Gulf women, and particularly Omani women, are facing. The author draws attention to elements affecting women’s career choices, by exploring both her own experience as a journalist, currently working for Al Jazeera Network, and those of other women in the media sector of her country. The chapter is an in-depth expression of her understanding of local women’s thoughts and opinions about their society, gender roles and the media. Gulf society is struggling to close the gap between modernization and tradition and the chapter concludes that women’s situation in the region is not completely dark, thanks to female skills, intelligence and determination.
