Abstract

Regalado offers an introduction to Urroz’s narrative from The Laws Chosen by Love (Las leyes que el amor elige, 1993) to Foolishness (Demencia, 2016), with a special emphasis on the intertextual links between his campus novel Friction (Fricción, 2009) and previous works in the Hispanic, Latin American, and universal tradition: the fictionalization of Mikhail Bakhtin’s studies about Rabelais, and the homage to novels by Mexican Sergio Pitol (To Tame the Sacred Heron [Domar a la divina Garza], 1988) and Chilean José Donoso (Where Elephants Die [Donde van a morir los elefantes], 1995) that followed a similar approach to grotesque realism.
