Abstract
After the Udine School, Marco Protasi, Alberto Marchetti Spaccamela and I were very excited and started to conceive the publication of two books on algorithms: one devoted to fundamental algorithms and one devoted to combinatorial optimization problems and approximation algorithms. The first one was completed and published in Italian four years later. The writing of the second one was more difficult because the field was exponentially growing throughout the 1980s and even more dramatically in the 1990s. Any time we thought we had a suitable draft a new breakthrough result came to change the picture. Finally after twenty years, three drafts and three more authors (Pierluigi Crescenzi, Giorgio Gambosi and Viggo Kann) the book appeared in 1999.
