“Isn’t It Just Bullshit?”: From Uncreative Writing to Warhol and Back

Abstract

That some radical claims for Uncreative Writing prove to be inaccurate does not mean that the work is essentially conservative. Looking at Uncreative Writing’s inheritance from the Andy Warhol of the Silver Factory years—his laconic problematizing of the artist’s relationship to his object matter—Chapter 3 engages close readings of Vanessa Place, Robert Fitterman and Ara Shirinyan to show that at its most uncomfortable, Uncreative Writing offers a telling critique of the cultural privilege on which avant-garde literature rests.
