Abstract
The gravid patient undergoing surgery for an abdominal procedure presents several unique challenges with regard to anesthetic management. To properly care for the parturient and her fetus, it is imperative that the practitioner has a detailed understanding of how the physiological alterations of pregnancy alter anesthetic management, and how anesthetics can affect the fetus. Recommendations will be provided for the provision of safe anesthetic care to the parturient and her fetus during the perioperative period.
