CBCT and the Diagnosis of Temporomandibular Joint Disease

  • First Online:

Abstract

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are a diverse group of conditions, often with multifactorial etiology, which can affect one or multiple elements of the TMJ including the osseous and soft tissue (e.g., articular disc and capsule) components of the articulation and supportive and functional aspects such as the muscles of mastication and ligamentous attachments. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) provides excellent detail and is the imaging modality of choice for the assessment of osseous anatomy and pathologic changes in the TMJ articulation.CBCT is inappropriate to demonstrate the soft tissue elements of the TMJ. The purpose of this Chapter is to provide radiographic correlative anatomy of the TMJ and detail CBCT acquisition protocols and strategies for radiologic interpretation. The characteristics of the normal TMJ articulation are described and imaging features of congenital, developmental and acquired disorders discussed.
